According to the HSE, 15.4 million working days are lost due to mental ill health every year. Despite these alarming statistics, workplace mental health is something that many people feel isn't being taken very seriously by their employers. However, over the past 5 years, Thames Water has implemented a mental health strategy that has seen significant results.
According to a WWT article, Karl Simons, Thames Water's chief health, safety and security officer, said "The introduction of mental health first aiders has led to a cultural revolution across Thames Water. Mental health first aiders are a catalyst for engagement, providing our employees with the confidence to come forward and seek support at their time of need."
The HSE recently published research which evaluated the effectiveness of mental health first aid. Although the results were inconclusive, mainly due to the lack of data, the HSE have updated their guidance to support the use of MHFA within workplaces.
So far, over 15,000 employers throughout the UK have trained mental health first aiders within their workplace, but this figure could rise considerably if this new guidance is adopted by other organisations.
