Here at Medical Training Solutions this is something we see far too often.

Most companies see first aid training as a 'tick box' requirement often with a 'cheapest will do' attitude. However, this approach often leads to staff being ill equipped to handle workplace emergencies and thus placing their customers in harms way.

This was most recently shown in another burn incident onboard a Ryanair flight. This is the third burn incident that has made the media in the last 2 years.

Thomas McNab, 49 years old, was flying home from Faro with his Partner Tonia when we was left in agony after crew 'accidentally spilled hot water on him'. This left his ankles with partial thickness burn injures.

As healthcare professionals we would have advised cold running water for a minimum of 10 minutes and dressing with clingfim. However, the crew decided to provide Mr McNab with gel pads and creams to administer. Not only this, they decided to reject his request for an ambulance once he landed on the basis that it would be embarrasing for him.

This breaks every single responsiblity of the workplace first aider, which is to preserve life, alleviate suffering and prevent the condition from worsening. Once examined by medical professionals he was advised to go to hospital immediately to be treated.

This is the difference in having your staff trained by experienced medics with professional qualifications.
